BCDP Blog: 2017 Endorsements

At the October Executive Committee (EC) meeting, the EC voted on the Boulder County Democratic Party's endorsements of ballot initiatives that Boulder County residents will be voting on on November 7th. We've published a guide with some pros and cons of these initiatives here. Below are our endorsements by city.

Boulder:

The Executive Committee voted to support Boulder ballot questions 2L, 2O, and 2P in support of continuing the city's municipalization efforts and continuing to navigate the legal and economic questions it may raise.

  • 2L:  Utility Occupation Tax Increase and Extension
    • Passed by 2/3 majority
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 2O:  Charter Requirement for Vote Before Electric Construction Debt
    • Passed by 2/3 majority
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 2P: Charter Provision Allowing Executive Sessions for Municipalization
    • Passed by 2/3 majority
    • Recommended vote: YES.

The EC considered ballot issues 2M and 2N together, weighting that they are needed to move fire station #3 out of the flood plain, upgraded police radio station, build a new home for Meals on Wheels Boulder, increase growing garden capacity, expand recycling center, new\improve pool, and many other items in our community.

  • 2M  0.3 Cents Capital Improvement Tax Extension
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 2N Debt Authority For Capital Improvement Tax
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.

Longmont:

  • 2H: Public safe direct sales tax
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 2I – Marijuana tax
    • While we would have liked to see more of this tax revenue continually allocated to affordable housing (that percentage is permanently at 1.5% while the base tax rate would be allowed to be raised up to 15%), we recognize that passing this does bring in tax revenue for the city of Longmont from Marijuana sales that it would otherwise be missing out on.
    • Passed by 2/3 majority
    • Recommended vote: YES.

Louisville:

  • 2F: Historic Preservation Tax Extension
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 2G: Authorizing Broadband Services
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.

County-wide:

  • 1A - Worthy Cause 0.05% Countywide Sales and Use Tax Extension
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 1B - Sheriff Term Limit Extension to Five Terms
    • The EC had an important discussion on this topic; in opposition, members spoke to the importance of not removing term limits just because we currently have someone good in a position. In support, members emphasized that positions like sherrif are not political positions, but professional ones that need professionals to fill them.
    • Passed by 2/3 majority
    • Recommended vote: YES.
  • 1C - Authorization to Provide Broadband Services
    • We unanimously voted to support this initiative.
    • Recommended vote: YES.
